gum disease and treatment salt lake city cosmetic dentistGum disease begins with bacteria in the mouth. Some bacteria are harmless and some are not, and they all make a home within the plaque that is continually forming on our teeth. When we neglect our dental hygiene, the plaque builds up, allowing the bacteria to multiply enormously. The bacteria give off toxins and eventually cause infection.

This is the early stage of gum disease, gingivitis, and you can notice it by soreness in the gums, maybe some swelling, and some bleeding when you brush. At this stage, your teeth are still safe.

The purpose of periodontal therapy is to preserve the health of your natural teeth and the gum tissue around them. You should receive a comprehensive periodontal examination every six months, and discuss any existing complaints or conditions with your family dentist. Such an examination may also involve:

  • A review of your medical and dental history
  • A clinical examination
  • A radiographic analysis of your teeth and
  • Microbiologic, genetic, biochemical, or other diagnostic tests that may also be useful to assess your periodontal status.

Diseases of the periodontium may be categorized as:

  • Gingival disease or gum disease
  • Periodontitis
  • Necrotizing periodontal diseases
  • Abscesses of the periodontium, and
  • Developmental or acquired deformities and conditions

Gum treatments

These areas are very difficult to keep clean, and the general treatment to remove the bacteria is root planing and scaling.

For specific, persistent periodontal pockets, we use antibiotic treatment. In the deeper pocket areas where bacteria continue to thrive, the area is thoroughly cleaned and an antibiotic solution is injected into the periodontal pocket. We encourage our patients to leave this area undisturbed for several days. We have been very successful in our periodontal therapy.
