Teeth Whitening

The color or brightness of your teeth can make all the difference in how your smile comes across. Teeth whitening has become the most common cosmetic dentistry treatment, and may be the solution for giving you the smile you always wanted.

As you get older, you may notice that your teeth aren't the same shade of white as they used to be when you were younger. Noticeable discoloration can begin as early as your late 20s and early 30s.

A number of factors can accelerate this discoloration:

• Smoking
• Dark drinks (coffee, black tea, red wine, and cola drinks)
• Minerals in drinking water
• Hereditary predisposition to early yellowing
• Onset of gum and tooth disease

How white could my teeth be?

How white your teeth can become depends partly on what caused their discoloration. There are some antibiotic drugs that can cause lasting discoloration to the teeth. It can also depend on your heredity, which puts a cap on how white they can get.

Doing it yourself

It also depends on the quality of the teeth whitening system you use. Drugstores and grocery stores carry products you can use at home, even generic tooth trays to fit over your teeth. The whitening gel these kits contain is typically not as strong as that used by dentists, and is therefore less effective.

Our teeth become whiter only while they’re in contact with the whitening agent in the gel. Therefore, whitening toothpaste would do doesn’t contact the teeth long enough to make any appreciable difference.

A custom-made tray is important if you want to do the whitening at home. It’s well worth it to visit Dr. Warr and have him provide you with a tray that will fit snugly over your particular teeth, so the gel will contact your teeth evenly, and produce an even result. He can also give you stronger whitening gel that is available in stores.
