How To Properly Brush Your Teeth | Family Dentistry MidvaleBright teeth and healthy gums begin with effective oral hygiene habits at home. Our family dentistry helps patients from Midvale, West Jordan, and other areas throughout Salt Lake City establish and maintain habits that can help teeth last a lifetime.

Properly brushed teeth benefit both your general and oral health. The immediate rewards of proper brushing include a gunk-free smile and fresh breath. Over the long term, effective, daily teeth cleaning regimens help prevent tooth loss, gum disease and related issues like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Here are five key elements to properly brushing your teeth:

Toothbrush: The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends only using brushes with soft bristles. Electric brushes are helpful if you suffer from arthritis or mobility issues in your hands or shoulders. Otherwise, standard brushes are just as effective. The ADA recommends you use a new brush every three to four months.

Toothpaste: Specialty toothpastes, such as whitening or tartar control variants, can be particularly harsh on teeth. You should just use a pea-sized dab of ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.

Frequency: While the ADA recommends brushing at least twice a day, three brushings a day, following meals, is optimal.  Brushing more than three times a day can harm tooth enamel.

Brushing technique:

  • Position your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle along your gum line.
  • Make small, circular motions.
  • Brush the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.
  • Brush your inner and back molars.
  • Brush your tongue.

Following brushing: Be sure to thoroughly rinse your brush and store it with the bristle-side up. For optimal oral hygiene, you should also floss at every brushing.

Of course, no oral hygiene system would be complete without regular dental checkups.  Contact Warr Dental today by calling 801-216-3713 or by completing the form on this page to schedule your appointment with Dr. Warr.
