Inlays and Onlays Metal-Free Fillings

serving Salt Lake City, Midvale, West Jordan and surrounding areas in Utah

White fillings are separated into two categories - in-office composite and lab-fabricated inlays / onlays. White fillings are used to restore minor cavities, decayed teeth, and repair defects or replace old, worn-out metal fillings.

Unlike metal or amalgam fillings, white fillings do not significantly expand and contract. This reduces the chance that your filling will crack or fracture a healthy tooth structure.

Warr Dental's lab-fabricated metal-free fillings are available in pressed porcelain, the preferred material due to their durability and natural appearance (Do not confuse pressed porcelain, lab-fabricated inlays/onlays with in-office composite fillings). Although in-office composite fillings have many advantages over metal fillings, pressed porcelain inlays / onlays are superior in their strength and durability).

If you have older fillings in your teeth, you may want to consider replacing worn or cracked fillings with the more aesthetically pleasing and durable porcelain inlays or onlays or white fillings for optimum protection against decay or breakage. These new materials not only look like natural teeth, they return damaged teeth close to their original strength. Cosmetic dentistry has advanced to the point where fillings can now be matched to the color of your teeth and thus be virtually invisible. There is no reason for anyone other than your dentist to know you have fillings!

How are Natural In-office Composite Fillings done?

Natural in-office composite fillings are done in a similar way to other fillings.

  • After removing the decayed part of the tooth, Dr. Warr will use a very mild priming solution to etch the tooth surface
  • We'll then brush a bonding agent onto the tooth
  • Then several thin layers of a tooth-colored composite are applied
  • After the white filling is in place, it is hardened, or cured, with a special high-intensity light
  • Finally, we will polish the white filling so that it blends in perfectly with the rest of your smile

The result of metal-free fillings is far superior to older, metal fillings and is a much more aesthetic dental restoration that will last for many years and strengthen your tooth.

Advantages of White Fillings

There are many different advantages to receiving white fillings over metal, or amalgam, fillings.  White fillings:

  • Require only a minimal amount of healthy tooth structure to be removed
  • Are bonded to the tooth, strengthening the final restored tooth
  • Are more stable than mercury amalgam
  • Provide a tighter seal
  • Represent a more advanced technology
  • Are more similar in appearance to your tooth
  • Are much more resistant to fracturing
  • Do not weaken your teeth since they don't expand with heat the way metal does
  • Restore your teeth to their original strength and provide you with a beautiful appearance
  • Are cosmetically pleasing
  • Take less time to harden than traditional fillings-so you'll be out of the dentist's chair sooner!

If you do have a cavity, natural fillings are for you. They're used in almost all instances where metal fillings once were. Additionally, if you currently have metal fillings, you can have Dr. Warr replace your metal fillings with natural fillings. Warr Dental can help you with gorgeous dental restorations that defy detection. Say goodbye to "metal mouth"!
