Though they don’t require the same upkeep, false teeth must still be maintained to stay functional and keep the mouth healthy. If you live in West Jordan, Dr. Keith Warr can examine your mouth and discuss the steps you should take to get the most from full or partial dentures.
Many patients who have lost some or all of their teeth have found that dentures are a good solution for restoring the smile and giving them better ability to eat and speak. Others, however, opt for dental implants because of their greater strength and stability, as well as being able to care for them like natural teeth.
Regardless of the restoration you’d like to have, the first step is visiting our office near West Jordan for a consultation. If you’re a good candidate for dentures, Dr. Warr will take an impression to create a custom prosthetic that fits comfortably in your mouth.
Once you have dentures, it’s important to be diligent about cleaning and caring for them. Regularly do the following:
- Brush dentures daily to remove stains and plaque; use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle movements, rather than a scrubbing motion
- Rinse dentures after meals to remove bits of food
- Choose non-abrasive toothpastes and cleaning solutions; Dr. Warr can answer your questions about acceptable products
- Take your dentures out regularly to clean them and let the gum tissue relax; many patients do this overnight, but you can leave dentures in while sleeping
Over time it’s possible for dentures to stain and become discolored. Though the prosthetic material can’t be whitened like normal teeth, using an ultrasonic cleaner can often get the restoration close to its original color.
