When most people think of straightening their teeth, they think the only option is traditional orthodontics, or braces, which can be an expensive, time-consuming procedure involving headgear or other embarrassing appliances.
But that is no longer the case! If you've ever wanted to straighten your teeth but couldn't stand the thought of braces, instant orthodontics may be for you. Instant orthodontics involves making crooked teeth appear straight or closing spaces between teeth using porcelain veneers. The process takes 2 to 3 weeks, rather than months or years, and provides you with the appearance of straight teeth. This form of treatment in some cases can provide a more esthetic result than orthodontics alone.
Who is a candidate for Instant Orthodontics?
If you have crooked teeth, gaps, or slight turning of one or more teeth but your bite is generally good, you may be a good candidate for instant orthodontics. Porcelain veneers are suitable for adults of all ages who take good care of their teeth and gums and do not have significant gum disease. Dr. Warr performs a thorough consultation and examination for all patients who want to improve the appearance of their smile. During this visit, he spends time listening thoughtfully to concerns and desired improvements.
When discussing the potential of instant orthodontics, he provides detailed information regarding how the treatment works, how long it may last, and what maintenance is required to get the most use out of porcelain veneers. Patients who have dental conditions such as gingivitis, gum disease, or tooth decay will have those issues treated before we commence with their cosmetic work. If a patient clenches or grinds their teeth, Dr. Warr may fabricate a custom-fit night guard that will protect the veneers from excessive stress. Patients must also commit to not biting on hard objects, including their nails, once they have their veneers.
Advantages of Instant Orthodontics
- Porcelain veneers are practically instant compared to living with painful braces for years!
- Your teeth are ideally shaped when you use veneers. Braces only straighten teeth. They don't make them look gorgeous as well.
- If you've been unsuccessful in whitening your teeth with brushing or bleaching, instant orthodontics can give you that brighter smile.
Instant orthodontics allows Warr Dental to provide you with the beautiful, straight, white teeth you have always wanted in as few as two visits. Braces can cause slobbery saliva, stains, and varying degrees of discomfort. Why go through all of that when instant orthodontics can give you the same look (or probably better) almost instantly?
Are there any risks to Instant Orthodontics?
Are there any risks to instant orthodontics? Instant orthodontics require ongoing maintenance and cannot be removed permanently. Good candidates for porcelain veneer treatment understand that their restorations must be taken care of in the form of daily brushing and flossing and the avoidance of biting on hard objects.
Veneers can pop off, chip, or become loose over time. If this happens, the veneer needs to be replaced. When in the instant orthodontics treatment process, patients may experience tooth sensitivity. This usually occurs when eating or drinking hot or cold substances. Sensitivity is usually temporary and will resolve shortly after the porcelain veneers have been bonded to the teeth. In the meantime, patients may use toothpaste for sensitive teeth to alleviate this symptom.
Combining multiple Orthodontic procedures
The instant orthodontics treatment can address the appearance of multiple teeth at one time, yes. Depending on the teeth that will receive veneers, some patients also choose to undergo Zoom! teeth whitening treatment. This procedure is performed in the office in about an hour and can lighten natural enamel to match the shade that is selected for the final porcelain veneers. Also, if necessary, functional restorations may also be involved in the treatment process for some patients. For example, if a tooth needs more coverage, Dr. Warr may design a lifelike crown to restore it.
Can I get Veneers the same day as a consultation?
Can I get veneers the same day as a consultation? No. The porcelain veneer process takes 2 to 3 visits in total. After your consultation, our team may begin treatment-planning by taking photographs or necessary measurements. However, two main visits are needed to complete the process. One visit involves reducing the surface enamel of teeth that will be fitted with veneers. After reducing enamel, we will take impressions that will serve as a guide in the manufacturing process of the new veneers.
Temporary veneers will be adhered to the teeth to prevent damage and reduce sensitivity. The second visit involves the removal of the temporary veneers and the seating of the porcelain veneers that will remain on the teeth for many years. Before bonding veneers, Dr. Warr observes them carefully for appearance and fit. The patient also evaluates their smile and provides input. Veneers are not bonded to teeth until the dentist and patient are satisfied with all aspects of the restorations.
How can I prepare for Instant Orthodontics?
The primary responsibility of each patient preparing for their Instant Orthodontics treatment is to take good care of their teeth and gums. Daily brushing, morning and night, and once-a-day flossing can achieve this. Patients should contact our office if they have any questions. It may also be beneficial to stock up on softer foods that may be gentler on the temporary veneers that are placed after the first visit. Avoiding very hard, crunchy, or chewy foods can minimize the risk of a temporary veneer coming loose.
How Does Treatment Work?
Instead of wearing braces, LVI Fellow Dr. Warr shapes your teeth and applies a thin porcelain veneer. Uneven or crooked teeth can be recontoured and straightened so that they appear and function like straight teeth. The extent to which this can be done will depend on the degree of correction you would like to achieve.
Sometimes the best treatment may involve a combination of orthodontics and porcelain veneers. Instant orthodontics can vary from a simple space closure to a complete realignment.
Under the guidance of a professional cosmetic dentist, your new porcelain veneers will be indistinguishable from real teeth.
Is recovery different for instant orthodontics Vs. traditional?
There is no significant recovery from either type of orthodontic treatment. When a patient straightens their teeth with braces or an aligner system, they have multiple visits over many months during which their straightening appliance is either tightened or switched. After these changes, patients usually experience temporary soreness that may cause them to eat softer foods for a day or two. Instant orthodontics is different in that the treatment is done after a couple of visits that take place within a month. Soreness is usually not an issue for patients who get instant orthodontics. Their teeth or gums may feel slightly irritated for a day or two, and they may have slight tooth sensitivity, both of which can be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
What can I expect from my results?
Instant orthodontics are, well, instantly gratifying! The results of this treatment protocol are easy to maintain and typically last an average of 10 to 15 years. With excellent care, porcelain veneers can remain structurally sound for over 20 years.
