What Is Teeth Bonding?

Tooth bonding requires the application of a composite resin to a damaged or discolored tooth to restore the appearance of your smile. Dr. Warr will match the color of the resin to your surrounding teeth so the enhancement will be unnoticeable.

You might be a candidate for bonding on one or more teeth if you’re unhappy with your smile due to issues like:

  • Stains that won’t respond to teeth whitening
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Teeth with an unusual or unattractive shape
  • Gaps between teeth

After lightly preparing the surface of the tooth, Dr. Warr will shape the resin and harden it into place. Further adjustments to the material will then be made so the bonded area has a natural look, fit, and feel.

Ideal candidates for Tooth Bonding

Dental bonding offers a range of cosmetic and functional benefits. The best candidates are people who are experiencing surface-level issues such as cracked enamel, small gaps, or crooked tooth presentation.

You might be a candidate for bonding on one or more teeth if you’re unhappy with your smile due to issues like:

  • Stains that won’t respond to teeth whitening
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Teeth with an unusual or unattractive shape
  • Gaps between teeth

More affordable than options such as porcelain veneers, tooth bonding is a safe, effective, and durable treatment that is suitable for nearly all patients.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

Teeth bonding is a conservative option for improving your smile. It requires little to no removal of healthy tooth enamel.

Other advantages of tooth bonding include:

  • Less expense compared to porcelain veneers and many other cosmetic procedures
  • Little to no pain – anesthesia is usually unnecessary
  • A bonding appointment has a low time commitment – one visit lasting no more than 1 hour for each tooth
  • The procedure can be performed entirely in our Salt Lake City office, with no waiting for a lab to fabricate a restoration

Teeth that have been bonded don’t require additional care to keep healthy. Just brush and floss your teeth like normal, and be mindful not to bite down too forcefully or chew on anything too hard. Composite resin is strong, but it can chip and break off when exposed to extreme pressure.

Is Dental Bonding Painful?

It is possible to experience some tooth sensitivity after dental bonding. This can be handled with the use of toothpaste that is formulated for sensitive teeth. It may be best to avoid hot and cold beverages during your initial recovery phase as well, though most people feel “back to normal” within five to fourteen days.

Tooth bonding is less invasive than a filling and is not expected to result in discomfort. We can discuss pain management and dental sedation during your initial consultation to help ensure your continued comfort before and after your bonding has been applied.

The Tooth Bonding procedure in Salt Lake City, UT

In preparation for the bonding material, teeth are gently textured to help ensure the most secure adhesion. Once the teeth are prepared, bonding resin – which has been shaded to match adjacent teeth – is applied in layers, each one hardened with a curing light before the next is applied. Once enough material has been applied, it is sculpted and polished to look and feel just like natural tooth enamel.

What Is the After Care and Recovery Like for Tooth Bonding?

Recovery from dental bonding will not require any time off from work or a lengthy period of rest.

Some changes to the bite, which may affect speech and chewing, are to be expected with dental bonding. It may take a week or two to adjust fully. During this time, some tooth sensitivity is possible as well. It is advisable to use toothpaste formulated to minimize sensitivity for one to two weeks.

How to care for your teeth following the procedure

Dental bonding is cared for in the same way as your natural teeth. You will want to use a non-abrasive toothpaste and soft-bristle toothbrush to brush your teeth after every meal and snack. Avoid charcoal, baking soda, and similarly scratchy ingredients, they can damage bonding. Be sure to floss at least once daily and don’t forget to visit our office every six months for professional cleanings and examinations.

Try to avoid biting on ice, hard candy, and non-food items like pens. Consider drinking coffee, tea, and other dark beverages through a straw. Bonding is slightly stain-resistant but cannot be whitened. Once it is stained, it will need to be replaced.

For the most part, tooth bonding does not require additional care. During your time with us, we will provide specific instructions on how best to care for teeth with cosmetic restorations and help you get the most out of your newly restored smile.
