Warr Dental offers many tooth whitening solutions. We want you to know the details behind tooth discoloration and your treatment options including:

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

As you get older, you may notice that your teeth aren't the same shade of white as they used to be when you were younger. Noticeable discoloration can begin as early as your late 20s and early 30s.

A number of factors can accelerate this discoloration:

  • Smoking
  • Dark drinks (coffee, black tea, red wine and cola drinks)
  • Certain medications
  • Minerals in drinking water
  • Hereditary predisposition to early yellowing
  • Onset of gum and tooth disease

How White Could My Teeth Be?

We can evaluate your teeth, and whiten them to your chosen shade depending on the state of your oral health. But there may be a cap to how white your teeth can get. Your genetics could play a part in your tooth discoloration. Additionally, how white your teeth can become relies partly on what caused their discoloration. There are some antibiotic drugs that can cause tooth stains to last.

If you are unsure about whether your teeth would benefit from being a shade lighter, Dr. Warr also offers free bleach checks which will give you a balanced assessment for your shade of smile.

Can I Whiten My Teeth Myself?

This is contingent on the efficacy of the teeth-whitening product you use. Drugstores and grocery stores carry products you can use at home, even generic tooth trays to fit over your teeth. The whitening gel these kits contain is typically not as strong as that used by dentists and is therefore less effective.

Our teeth become whiter only while they are in direct contact with the teeth-whitening agent in the gel. Consequently, whitening toothpaste doesn’t maintain contact with the teeth long enough to make any appreciable difference.

A custom-made tray is important if you want to do the whitening at home. This ensures that each tooth comes into contact with the whitening agent and is more effective at lifting stains and discoloration with even results. We can provide you with at-home trays. It’s well worth a visit to Dr. Warr for him to provide you with a tray specifically created for your teeth with a snug fit. He can also give you stronger whitening gel than is available in stores.

Zoom!® Tooth Whitening

smiling professional woman standing with her arms foldedDr. Warr uses the Zoom!® tooth whitening system, which utilizes a special curing light to activate and speed up the tooth whitening action of the gel. Our dentist is specifically trained to use this professional teeth-whitening product. The procedure generally takes about 90 minutes including the time required to prepare your teeth and do a follow-up check afterward. In a little over an hour, your teeth will look brighter, and you will leave with a more confident smile!

Zoom!® offers our patients safe, fast, convenient teeth whitening results that are long lasting. This product involves a low-sensitivity procedure performed by a dental professional. Although results vary for everyone, Zoom!® treatments can help whiten your teeth a few (or even several) shades brighter.

Dr. Warr recognizes that you'll want your brightened smile to last as long as possible. He will custom-make trays for your teeth for future touch-ups you can do yourself, extending the results of your tooth whitening for years to come. Unlike over-the-counter teeth whitening products, these custom-made trays enable the whitening agent to penetrate every curve and contour of the tooth, producing far superior results.

After your Zoom!® Tooth Whitening treatment, Dr. Warr will send you home with our at-home treatment instructions to make sure your results are permanent and allow you to do touch-ups in the future.

Advantages of Professional Teeth Whitening Treatments

We have found professional teeth whitening to offer the best results for our patients, mainly because:

  • You can choose how much whiter you want your smile to be.
  • Only the strongest whitening agent is used.
  • Your gum tissue is protected.
  • Teeth are whitened evenly and on all surfaces.
  • The process is done quickly with immediate results.
  • Your results are professionally controlled by our dentist.
  • Over-the-counter methods take longer and are uncertain in their results.
  • Professional whitening treatments are comfortable, safer and more effective.
  • Your teeth will become permanently whiter.
  • Successfully brightening your smile may encourage you to take better care of your teeth.

These benefits are provided by two different forms of professional teeth whitening options: Zoom!® in-office whitening and our custom take-home trays. We offer both to better meet your preferences. Zoom!® offers results after one, quick appointment, and our custom trays can touch up your results over time. Customized trays can also be used as your main method of whitening as long as you are willing to wait two weeks to see your full results.

Professional vs. Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening

image exploring disadvantages of OTC teeth whitening productsIf you want to whiten your teeth, there are a multitude of options available to you. From toothpastes to light-activated whitening, modern teeth whitening options offer more flexibility than ever before. But it's important to know the differences between these treatments to compare their effectiveness, safety and treatment lengths.

Over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products make a lot of promises, but a majority of them fall short and may leave you with more discoloration due to uneven whitening. As we mentioned before, whitening toothpaste doesn’t come into contact with your teeth long enough to make a difference, and generic trays or strips fail to completely cover your teeth. The whitening-agents used in these OTC products are often too low to truly make a lasting change, but the potency also varies and may cause damage to your natural tooth enamel. These products may increase tooth sensitivity and gum recession.

Professional tooth whitening is comparable in price when you consider the cost of OTC alternatives and repeat trips to your local grocer or drugstore. The professional option ensures even, safe and lasting results. Dr. Warr will make sure your dental health stays intact while providing you with a brighter smile.

Comparing Your Teeth Whitening Options

When comparing the available methods for teeth whitening, you should consider:

  • The time it takes to see results.
  • The quality of the results.
  • The risk of gum sensitivity and irritation.

Over-the-counter kits take a couple weeks or longer before you will see the results. Zoom!® requires only about an hour, after which you'll have a bright, glamorously white smile. With Zoom!® and our customized take-home trays, your teeth will be evenly whitened on all surfaces. Whereas, you may notice that your teeth are whiter in certain spots than in others with the OTC kits because of the non-customized fit. With OTC options, you may not be able to achieve the level of whiteness you want.

Another factor to consider is the way whitening affects your gum tissue. With Zoom! whitening, we place a protective guard around your lips and gums, preventing the whitening gel from touching those tissues. With our take-home trays, the customized fit over your teeth does a good job of preventing the whitening gel from leaking out of the trays and touching your gums. The un-customized fit of OTC strips and trays may cause your gums to be irritated by the gel.
